Westmeath Boys U14 Féile Semi-Final
Thursday, 15th May
Athlone 7-9 Garrycastle 1-5

Athlone hosted local rivals Garrycastle in an eagerly awaited Feile semi-final that attracted a large crowd to Pairc Chiarain on Thursday evening.  A school bus breakdown meant a delayed start which added to the sense of anticipation for this local derby, on what was a lovely evening for football.

The opening exchanges were even with both sides swapping frees before a three goal salvo from Kevin Rowan, Enda Tynan Daly and Josh Beaumont put Athlone into the driving seat.  Garrycastle gamely fought back and put Athlone under pressure for long periods but tenacious defending restricted them to just three further first half points, while Kevin Rowan slammed home another goal to leave the half-time score 4-2 to 0-4 in Athlone’s favour.

With a lead to defend, the bigger Athlone lads were able soak up Garrycastle pressure and to use the large Pairc Chiarain pitch to their advantage.  Some brilliant attacking play saw them add a further 3-7, with a cheeky Donagh Prendergast goal after a great solo run being a particular highlight, to lead by 7-9 to 0-4 with time running out.  To their credit, the Garrycastle lads continued to put the Athlone defence under pressure and got their deserved reward with a late goal and a point to leave the full time score Athlone 7-9 Garrycastle 1-5.
