SFC Section B

 Athlone 0-13 St Loman’s 0-19

Our Senior team suffered their first defeat of this year’s championship when they were defeated by St Loman’s of Mullingar in Moate on Sunday evening.  Despite the final margin, this was a good performance in many ways from Athlone and they definitely deserved to be closer than six points down at the final whistle.  See full report elsewhere in the paper.

JFC Section B

Athlone 1-12 Garrycastle 2-9

Despite opening the scoring through a Joe Fallon free, Athlone were second best in the early stages and, after conceding a quickfire 1-2, needed a fine save from veteran keeper Amby Fogarty not to go seven points down.  Boosted by this reprieve, Athlone raised their game and got a chance to get back into the game from a penalty when Richie Greene was fouled in the square, however the home keeper pulled off a fine save to push his spot-kick over the bar.  Undeterred, Greene reduced the gap further from a free, before Athlone did finally get their three-pointer when David Fagan punched to the net to finish off a good move.   A second Joe Fallon free put Athlone two points ahead, but Garrycastle’s first point in 20 minutes left the minimum between the sides at the break, with Athlone leading by 1-4 to 1-3.

Garrycastle opened the second half strongly and regained the lead with two points from frees, but Athlone responded well again and some excellent attacking play yielded five consecutive points from Richie Greene (0-2), Eoin Jordan, Joe Fallon and Ryan Gaffey.  Any hopes the four point lead would be enough were quickly dispelled as the see-saw nature of the game continued and two points from frees and a goal following a flowing move put the home side back in the lead, which they doubled soon after with a point from play.  A point from wing-back Kieran Rigney kept Athlone in touch, but the hosts quickly restored their two point advantage as the game entered its closing minutes.  To their credit, Athlone refused to admit defeat and two superb points in a minute, the first from Colin O’Leary and the second from Mickey Greene brought them level.  Athlone did get a chance to win it in injury time but Rory Donnellan’s effort from a tight angle drifted agonisingly across the goal to leave the final score Athlone 1-12 Garrycastle 2-9.

Athlone:  Amby Fogarty, Shane Galvin, Benjy Bannon, Rory Donnellan, Eoin Jordan (0-1), Andy Lynam, Kieran Rigney (0-1), Aidan St John, David Fagan (1-0), Brian Fogarty, Joe Fallon (0-3), Ryan Gaffey (0-1), Tadhg Prendergast, Mickey Greene (0-1), Richie Greene (0-4)  Subs Used:  Shay Byrne, Colin O’Leary (0-1), Eoin Fahey.

Athlone 1-7 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-10

Our Junior side concluded their championship campaign with another battling away draw, this time against Mullingar Shamrocks.  After a poor first half performance, Athlone dominated the second half but, despite having several chances, were unable to find the necessary winning score that would’ve kept their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive.

Athlone:  Amby Fogarty, Shane Galvin, Rory Donnellan, Davie Connellan, Eoin Jordan, Emmet Collins (0-1), Andy Lynam, Aidan St John, Colin O’Leary, Tadhg Prendergast, Joe Fallon, Richie Greene (1-6), Mickey Greene, Conal Sheeran, Michael Galvin Subs Used:  Benjy Bannon, Paddy Bannon.

ACFL Division 1

Athlone 0-9 Garrycastle 1-9

Playing into the strong wind, Athlone started brightly with points from John Stapleton and Noel Mulligan from a 45, but they suffered a setback when intercounty forward John Connellan was forced off with an injury after just eight minutes.  The visitors then settled and, using the breeze to their advantage, hit three points from distance to take the lead for the first time.  Mickey Greene brought the home side level, but a Garrycastle goal followed by a further two points put them in control as half-time approached.  Noel Mulligan kept Athlone in touch with a point from a free after Danny Reid had been fouled, but another Garrycastle point in injury time left Athlone trailing by 1-6 to 0-4 at the break.

After a Mulligan free early in the second half had been cancelled out by a similar Garrycastle score, Jordan Marshment struck Athlone’s only score from play of the second half with a fine solo effort and another 45 from Noel Mulligan, after the visiting keeper had done well to prevent an Athlone goal, left just three points between the sides with 15 minutes remaining.  However Athlone were unable to narrow the gap any further and two late Garrycastle points, although matched by frees from Noel Mulligan and Joe Fallon, saw them home on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-9.

Athlone:  Conor Devaney, Eoin Maher, Damo Kelly, Fergal Murray, John Egan, Noel Mulligan (0-5), Tom Egan, John Stapleton (0-1), Jordan Marshment (0-1), Stephen Ward, Danny Reid, Alan Gaughan, Mickey Greene (0-1), Sam Omukoro, John Connellan  Subs Used:  Charlie McMickan, Danny Lynam, Joe Fallon (0-1).
