Athlone 4-9 Tubberclair 0-11

A blistering first half performance, during which the Greene ‘brothers’ scored four goals between them, set up our Junior team for a comfortable win against neighbours Tubberclair in perfect conditions in Páirc Chiaráin on Friday evening.

After an evenly matched opening 10 minutes, in which Tubberclair twice took the lead only to be pulled back by frees from Richie Greene and Joe Fallon, Athlone stepped up a gear and went ahead  for the first time when Richie Greene finished off a superb move for the first goal of the evening.  Tadhg Prendergast & Emmet Collins then added fine points, before Mickey Greene scored a five minute hat-trick of goals with three emphatic finishes as the visiting defence struggled to cope with the power and pace of the Athlone attacks.  A lovely outside of the boot effort from Dylan Lynch brought the home side’s first-half scoring to a close, and despite a couple of late Tubberclair frees, Athlone led comfortably at the break, by 4-5 to 0-6.

In contrast to the opening period, the second half was a much more sedate affair as the Tubberclair defence tightened up considerably, while the Athlone defence were able to deal with most the visitors’ attacks.  A Tubberclair point was the only score of the opening 10 minutes, but two frees from Joe Fallon and one from Richie Greene kept daylight between the sides.  Tubberclair enjoyed their best spell as the game entered its final quarter and, after two points from play, had a chance to narrow the gap even further when they were awarded a penalty.  However Conal Sheeran pulled off a great save to guarantee a comfortable closing 10 minutes for the home side, even though Tubberclair did add another point from the resultant 45.  Richie Greene got Athlone’s final score when his goal-bound shot was touched over the bar by the keeper and a Tubberclair point on the stroke of full-time left the final score Athlone 4-9 Tubberclair 0-11.
