Athlone Minors v St. Lomans

posted 29 Jul 2017, 15:01 by Athlone GAA

Our minor boys played their Division 1 championship first round last Wednesday evening versus St. Lomans.  Compliments must go to the home side for having the pitch in immaculate condition for this fixture. In what turned out to be a disappointing result, the Athlone lads never really got going and now know they must win their remaining two group games to qualify for the knock out stage. Athlone didn't register a score until the 18th minute through a Shane Allen free; St. Lomans had accumulated 1-4 by that stage. Enda Daly and Josh Beaumont added two further points to pull the deficit back to 4. However a flurry of late St. Lomans scores left the half time score at 1-8 to 0-3 in favour of the home side.

There was a much improved effort from the Athlone lads in the second half. They refused to throw the towel in and tried hard until the final whistle.  This was epitomised by a fine Benny Martin free in the first minute. However Lomans stretched their lead with 3 points in quick succession. Shane Allen and Benny Martin soon had Athlone back in touch. They finished with 3 further points from Martin as he finished with a tally of 5 points. Thegame finished 1-13 to 0-9 to St. Lomans.

In what was a lacklustre performance by the Athlone lads, they know they are capable of much more when it comes to championship performances. Diarmuid Martin and John Duddy tried hard to keep the score down, while Donagh Prendergast ran himself to a standstill in the forward line. Benny Martin gave another fine display of point taking off both feet, while Mark Egan showed his potential off the bench at half time as the Lomans defence found it hard to handle his direct style of running. Our next round is fixed for Wednesday 9th August.
