Athlone 2-7 Tyrrellspass 1-10

Our Senior men finished their Division 1 campaign with a deserved draw against Tyrrellspass in their final league game, played in glorious weather conditions on a perfect Páirc Chiaráin pitch on Sunday evening last.

Despite opening the scoring through a John Connellan point, Athlone were second best early on and trailed by 1-3 to 0-1 after five minutes, as they struggled to cope with the pace and power of the Tyrrellspass attacks.  Gradually, however, Athlone settled and points from centre-back Stephen Ward and a Connellan free brought them back into the game.  A pair of frees from county star Ger Egan restored the visitors' five-point advantage as half-time approached, but a superb point from Shane Allen point was followed by a Jack Quinn goal, when he slotted home the rebound after a John Connellan shot had been saved, to leave just the minimum between the sides at the break, 1-5 to 1-4 in favour of Tyrrellspass.

It took the home side only seconds of the second period to erase the deficit, when Stephen Ward finished off a good move straight from the throw-in, although another free from the visitors soon after restored their advantage.  Darren Magee brought Athlone level again and they then took the lead when Kieran Colclough found the net with a powerful finish after a Noel Mulligan 45 had come back off the crossbar.  The hosts now had the initiative but were unable to add to their total, and Tyrrellspass reduced the deficit to just one with another brace of points.  John Connellan kept Athlone's noses in front with this third score, but this was to be their last score as the struggled to turn possession into opportunities in the closing stages.  Instead Tyrrellspass brought themselves back to within a point as the game entered injury time, before Egan converted a close range free after 62 minutes to bring his side level.  This was to prove the final act of an entertaining tussle, with the 2-7 to 1-10 draw ensuring Athlone's place in the top league for next season.
