Athlone 2-8 Rosemount 3-7

Our senior men returned to competitive action when they hosted Rosemount in Páirc Chiaráin on Friday night, but, despite getting off to a great start, they were second best for most of the game and eventually went down to a two point defeat.

Despite getting off to a dream start when Jordan Marshment set up Danny Reid for a goal straight from the throw-in, Athlone struggled in the opening stages and conceded two goals to trail by 2-3 to 1-3 after 20 minutes, with their points coming from a Richie Greene free and two well-taken scores from Ryan Gaffey.  The home side improved as half time approached with another Greene free and points either side of break from Jack Quinn and John Stapleton bringing them level.  Again, however, Athlone failed to push on and Rosemount regained the initiative with two quick points followed by their third goal.  A Darren Magee point kept Athlone in touch, but after Jack Quinn had hit the crossbar with a powerful effort, two further points gave the visitors a two-goal cushion with time almost up.  A Richie Greene free and a goal from Tom Egan with the last kick of the game put some gloss on the scoreline, but the visitors had done enough and were deserving winners on a scoreline of 3-7 to 2-8.

Next up for Athlone in Division 1 are reigning county champions St Loman’s in Páirc Chiaráin at 8pm on Friday the 16th and they will know that they will need a much improved performance if they are to repeat last year’s league win against the Mullingar men.
