Athlone 1-9 St Paul’s 2-10

Athlone’s junior men made the long journey to Clonmellon on Saturday afternoon for their first game in this year’s ACFL Division 4 and were unlucky to come away with a four point defeat against a strong home side, who are among the favourites for this year’s junior championship.

Athlone got off to a disastrous start when a quickly taken close range free caught the defence off guard and led to a first minute goal for the home side, which they quickly followed up with a point from play.  A swirling crossfield wind made life difficult for both teams and there were no further scores until the 17th minute, when debutant Mark Egan intercepted a poor clearance from the St Paul’s keeper and finished coolly to the net to bring Athlone back into the game.  St Paul’s responded with their second point, but Athlone had found their rhythm and four points in five minutes from Fergal Murray (another junior debutant?), the evergreen Joe Fallon (0-2) and David Fagan after a great move gave them a two point lead, although a fine solo point from St Paul’s reduced the gap to the minimum at the break.

The opening exchanges of the second half were evenly fought and two opening St Paul’s points were answered by two Joe Fallon frees, before another pair of scores from the home side were matched by an excellent point from Mark Egan to leave the sides level 1-7 apiece after 50 minutes.  Athlone were very much in the game at this stage but another brace of points from the Clonmellon men was quickly followed by their second goal and suddenly the visitors faced a five point deficit as the game entered its final five minutes.  Fallon kept them in touch with another free but they were unable to close the gap any further and another St Paul’s point from a free on 60 minutes made the game safe.  Athlone had the final say when the returning Brendan Fagan pointed from close range but St Paul's had done enough to win on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-9.
