ACFL Division 1
Athlone 5-9 Castledaly 0-6

Our senior team recorded their first win of the Division 1 campaign when they eventually overcame the challenge of a determined, but understrength, Castledaly side in Páirc Chiaráin on Sunday morning.

The home side started sluggishly and trailed by 0-3 to 0-1 after 10 minutes, their point coming from John Connellan, while they also lost Tom Egan and Matty Darling from the full-back line in the opening stages, to a black card and injury respectively.  Athlone recovered from these setbacks and a Connellan free, followed by well-taken points from Jordan Marshment and Paul Bannon put them into the lead, before Danny Reid set up John Connellan to flick home the game’s opening goal.  The lively Connellan added another point, but it was the visitors who had the final say of the half when a long-range effort bounced over the bar to leave the half-time score 1-5 to 0-4 in Athlone’s favour.

A Castledaly free in the first minute reduced the gap further, and Athlone were dealt a further blow when John Connellan received a black card, but again they responded well and, with the aid of the strong wind, began to dominate possession in the middle third.  A long-range Shane Allen point restored their four-point advantage, but they squandered several good chances to stretch their lead after that, and it took until the midway point of the half for them to add to their total, when Jack Quinn finished a slick move to the net.  Veteran corner-back Fergal Murray followed this up with a rare score, before a devastating spell of three goals in as many minutes made the points safe, Ryan Gaffey, Danny Reid and John Stapleton with the goals.  An excellent Castledaly score from a 45 was answered by a Jack Quinn point to bring the scoring to a close, leaving Athlone the victors by 5-9 to 0-6.  Next up for Athlone in Division 1 is an away trip to play Mullingar Shamrocks in Springfield on Wednesday the 25th of April (throw-in 7.30pm), while the Division 4 side host Moate All-Whites in Páirc Chiaráin at 7.30 on Thursday April 26th.
